New Technology and Citizen Science

0:00 Introduction
1:20 Sarah and Marc consider the importance of training and welcoming people who are new to projects to set them and the research up for success, and the challenge of doing this at scale.
7:36 Intro to the topic of the interconnection between technology and citizen science and to today's panel host, Heather Fischer
8:51 Panel
10:16 Holli Kohl, the GLOBE Observer mobile application
14:54 Dr. Carlos Siordia, Center for Disease Control crowdsourcing competitions related to machine learning and natural language processing
17:42 Dr. Ved Chirayath, inventor and founder of the NeMO-Net project
27:38 Dr. Ted Smith, University of Louisville School of Medicine, Louisville Data Commons
30:47 Discussion, which covers topics from privacy and trust issues, learning from the challenges and failures related to technology and citizen science, machine learning and artificial intelligence, and new technology on the horizon.

Machine learning and artificial intelligence technology are already being used to relieve the tedium or verify results from citizen science. Early results from the merger of citizen science and new technologies are sometimes surprising. What have projects learned about how to effectively marry citizen and machine efforts? What new technology is on the horizon that might be deployed to make citizen science work more engaging or impactful?
