Artificial Intelligence and Citizen Science

A special event in collaboration with the Association for Advancing Participatory Science

How can the power of new research techniques fueled by artificial intelligence (AI) complement or enhance the work of volunteers in participatory or citizen science projects? A special collection on The Future of Artificial Intelligence and Citizen Science was released at the end of 2024 in the journal Citizen Science Theory and Practice to address this question.

The collection explores the dynamic intersection of AI and citizen science, showcasing innovative approaches to integrating AI into citizen science projects across various domains, tasks, and platforms. Articles showcase early achievements of AI, remaining challenges to its use, the ethical implications of its use, and possible paths for collaboration between citizen science and AI in the future.

Join us for a conversation with the editorial team behind the special collection and NASA’s Citizen Science Officer Marc Kuchner. Our discussion will focus on their observations of the emerging benefits of AI integration with citizen science, the common challenges, and trends for the future. Speakers will include:

Lucy Fortson - University of Minnesota, USA
Kevin Crowston
- Syracuse University, USA
Laure Kloetzer
- University of Neuchâtel, Switzerland
Marisa Ponti
- University of Gothenburg, Sweden
