In this twofer talk, Dr. Wallace will first share results from a 2.5-year experiment with over 50,000 paid crowdworkers and unpaid visitors contributing to a real-world citizen science project. This experiment yielded actionable insights into the factors that universally motivate everyone and the factors that only motivate each group.

In the second half of his program, Dr. Wallace will introduce Drafty, the user-centric platform he built to enable collaborative editing and maintenance of tabular data. This tool has particular relevance for citizen science projects. Dr. Wallace will be joined by Planet Patrol’s Dr. Veselin Kostov, who will introduce his project and have a conversation with Dr. Wallace about how Drafty might help Planet Patrollers better track their collective efforts to vet exoplanet candidates.
